Letter Performance (Paris 11) is a site specific work in a building
in the 11th district of Paris. It was part of „Social Housing & Con-
temporary Art“, a project by the Cultural Department of Paris in
collaboration with social housing organizations inviting four artists
to work in different buildings of the district.
Over the duration of eight weeks, I immersed myself in a building
in Rue Saint-Maur. Designed by the architect Olivier Gahinet, this
building is known for its peculiar architecture „à la Mondrian“. It
reflects the compact urban nature of the city of Paris: with a width
of just 5 meters and contains only 5 apartments.
are living there in harmony.
The Letter performance took place in the garden located behind the
building. Enclosed within three high walls, this garden is invisible
from the street. Only the residents see it from their windows. This
creates a strong link between them. The garden is not so well-
maintained but marks a subtle presence of nature. Somewhat bare,
it becomes a surface of projection.
The Letter Performance was carried out by the inhabitants of the
building. In an atmosphere both concentrated and playful, they
employed words drawn from observations and previous writing
The circulation of the images, documenting the performance
afterwards, is an important part of the project. They were printed
as postcards and widely distributed. They continue to spread into
other contexts, following unexpected paths.
